The colours reflect my childhood memories of the paintings of Dick Roughsy’s dreamtime creation stories.
Each group of animals and birds represent the different Aboriginal/Islander nations (different totems and languages) but many times these nations come together as one – for celebrations, for funerals, for sharing. Languages are understood between groups.
For example Victoria is made up of many neighbouring language groups and nations but they can all come together under the umbrella of the Kulin Nation.

Rockhampton, and as far south as Coffs Harbour. All meeting at a place near the Glasshouse Mountains, to participate in collecting bunya nuts and to partiicpate in
cultural ceremonies – this gathering took place over thousands of years. The painting depicts the welcoming of people from all directions – through song (welcome and farewell song) and dance (Waka Waka/Gubi Gubi).
